Schecter Guitar Research, which is usually just referred to as “Schecter,” is an American guitar maker currently known for its high quality and inexpensive electric guitars and basses. Founded by David Schecter in 1976, the company originally made a name for itself by producing high-quality replacement parts for Fender and Gibson guitars.
When David Schecter opened Schecter Guitar Research in 1976, their focus was upon quality replacement guitar bodies, including necks, as well as bridges, pickguards, tuners, knobs, pickups, and various electronic parts. Before long, it was possible to build a complete custom guitar using only Schecter parts. Though Schecter did not yet make its own line of guitars, it supplied custom shops with quality Schecter parts who would then build high quality custom guitars.
By the late 70’s, Schecter finally began to offer its own line of electric guitars, which were custom shop guitars modeled after traditional Fender designs such as the Telecaster and Stratocaster, which were received to high acclaim. Schecter hit the “big time” when the Who’s Pete Townsend toured with a custom Telecaster-style guitar that had two Gibson pickups and a 3-way pickup selector switch. The guitar was Townsend’s main stage guitar for years.
David Schecter eventually sold the company to a group of Texas investors who, unfortunately, forsook the company’s emphasis on quality and built sub-quality guitars hoping to capitalize on the quality Schecter name. Thankfully, Schecter was eventually sold to Japanese investor Hisatake Shibuya (who also owned ESP Guitars). Schecter Guitar Research is once again known for its quality guitars, including the popular Blackjack, Hellraiser, C-1, and Artist Series.
