Along with Fender, Gibson guitars have helped defined the musical landscape of blues, jazz, rock, and metal music over the past 50 plus years. With the possible exception of the Fender Stratocaster, no guitar is more synonymous with the power and sheer energy of rock and roll than the iconic Gibson Les Paul. If the Les Paul were Gibson’s only contribution to the musical world, that would certainly be enough to secure its place amongst legends.
Fortunately for us, the Les Paul is only one of a handful of Gibson’s contributions, though the Les Paul certainly remains its most important.
With all the advances in technology over the past fifty years, it’s incredible that that electric guitar really hasn’t changed a whole lot. Most instruments since the 1950’s have been an homage (purposely or not) to either the Fender Stratocaster, the Gibson Les Paul, or one of Gibson’s other numerous offerings. Think about how futuristic the Gibson Explorer and the Gibson Flying V must have looked during the 1950’s! Nevertheless, those guitars still have a contemporary feel about them and have inspired guitar makers from Hamer to Dean to Parker. Clearly, Gibson guitars have earned their reputation for quality and innovation for a reason.
It would be easy for the company to rest on its laurels, but thankfully they are still pushing the boundaries of what can be done through technology. The Gibson Robot guitar is an example of the company’s continued dedication to excellence and innovation.
